TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The office in charge of placing unaccompanied children, like the ones in Nogales, with sponsors in the United States released a report of a state by state breakdown of the number of kids taken in by each state.

In Arizona, approximately 186 kids were placed so far this year.

California, New York, Texas and Florida are the big four, all over 3,000 from January 1 through July 7, 2014. Other states in the top 10 include Virginia, Maryland and Georgia.

More than 30,000 kids who have made it into the U.S. illegally this year have found homes with a sponsor. That can be a parent, relative, family friend, or anyone who decides this is something they want to do.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement says a sponsor receives a background check to search for criminal history and the child is also interviewed.

The main goal for the sponsor is to make sure the minor goes to all immigration proceedings.

Kids are only released to a sponsor once they are vaccinated and medically cleared.

An unaccompanied minor might also not be released to a sponsor and kept in the care of the ORR. That’s if a judge orders them to be deported; the child turns 18 years old and is placed back in DHS custody; the minor requests voluntary departure or a judge grants legal relief to the minor.
