Streetcar celebrations kick off

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -  Finally the modern streetcar will be taking on passengers today.

But before the passengers hop on there will be celebrations in each of the five districts where the streetcar travels.

The morning will start with a ribbon cutting at each of the five districts the streetcar travels to, beginning with the west side at Mercado at 7 a.m.  The ribbon cutting will continue to the U of A, Maingate Square, 4th Avenue, finishing up downtown at 9 a.m. where the big celebration starts.

On hand will be federal and city officials to help start passenger service.  Following that residents will be able to take part in the free ride weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Passengers will start paying to ride the streetcar on Monday.
