(CNN) - Hamas asked for a 24-hour humanitarian truce with Israel Sunday, after initially rejecting one.

Speaking on CNN, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the request.

He says the militant group continues to fire rockets, violating its own agreement.

"Hamas is simply continuing all its operations. And Israel will not let this terror operation decide when it's convenient for them and not convenient for them to attack our people,” Netanyahu said. “When it's convene when it's convenient to stock and reload and when it's not convenient for them. We will do whatever is necessary to protect our people."

Israel had taken back its own 24-hour truce offer earlier Sunday after it says Hamas fired into its territory.

The new ceasefire offer follows a 12-hour truce observed by both sides Saturday.

A senior advisor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas tells CNN a delegation will be heading to Cairo, Egypt to negotiate the terms of a new ceasefire.
