TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police say a man who tried to kidnap a baby from a hotel room on Tuesday has been captured.

According to a police report, a woman was staying at a Days Inn in east Toledo near Hollywood Casino with her boyfriend and 4-month-old baby. Around 6 a.m. on Monday, the woman left the sleeping baby in the hotel room while she walked her boyfriend out to his car. When she came back, she caught a stranger holding her baby.

"She quickly grabbed the baby away from the guy as he was attempting to leave her room, and then she noticed that she had some cash and other miscellaneous [items] stolen out of her room," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

As soon as she grabbed her baby from the stranger, the woman called police.

Sgt. Heffernan says it's unusual for the police department to handle a baby-snatching case. They posted pictures from the hotel's security cameras to their Facebook page, hoping someone will recognize him.

On Wednesday, police announced Jaequan Smith had been captured. Smith has been charged with burglary and kidnapping.

"Any time that we have somebody out there that would actually grab a baby intentionally, it is a concern for the community," Heffernan said. "That is why we wanted to get his picture out as soon as we could."

The baby was not harmed during the attempted abduction.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Crime Stopper at 419-255-1111.

You would think the time on the front lines got the best of Louis Mirabelli. He has spent a week fighting the Sawmill Fire, since the first 911 call came in southeast of Green Valley on Sunday, April 23, around noon. Since then, he's been sleeping in tents, under the smoky stars, with a regimented three square meals a day.
