NORTHERN GAZA (CNN) - On Wednesday, mortar shells fell near another United Nations school and near a street market in Gaza, and Israeli soldiers died in a booby-trapped tunnel.

Amid failed attempts at a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, the death toll continues to rise, with civilians paying the price.

Calling up another 16,000 troops, the Israel Defense Forces have now activated 86,000 reservists since July 8.

The photographer for a Palestinian news agency was reportedly among the injured on Wednesday

"We saw the shells when they hit, and shrapnel was falling like rain,” Sanaa Abugerad said of the explosion at the UN school. “I was so scared and the school filled with smoke. We poured water in our eyes just to see."

This is just one of several UN schools used as shelters where shells have either hit or fallen near over the last few days.

Israel says some of the attacks in Gaza are the result of Hamas' errant rocket fire. The IDF claims more than 200 rockets fired from Gaza have landed in Gaza since the start of this latest round of violence in the Middle East.

The Israel Defense Forces focuses much of its attention on tunnels like this one, which militants use to sneak under Israel's border with Gaza.

Explosions killed three IDF soldiers as they uncovered a tunnel entrance inside a home in southern Gaza. Hamas said its fighters had lured Israeli soldiers inside a house booby-trapped with improvised explosive devices.

The death toll so far: more than 50 Israeli soldiers and three Israeli civilians, according to the IDF.

According to Gaza health officials, more than 1,300 Palestinians have died - of which, the UN estimates 70 to 80 percent are civilians caught in the violence.

Two weeks after the end of the Gaza war, there is growing evidence that Hamas militants used residential areas as cover for launching rockets at Israel, at least at times. Even Hamas now admits "mistakes" were made.
