Growing Sahuarita Unified School District heading back to school

SAHUARITA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Another school district is heading back to class today in Southern Arizona.  It is the first day of school for the Sahuarita Unified School District.

Kindergarten through fifth grade are beginning classes this morning at 7:30 a.m. in this growing school district.  As more families move to the area, more students are enrolling.  According to Sahuarita Unified officials there are more than 6,001 students heading to class for the 2014 - 2015 school year.  Last school year there were only 5,600 students enrolled among the nine schools in the district.

As for teachers, district officials are saying there is only one position that has not been filled, though there are more than 11 long term subs beginning the school year.

District officials say they are looking to fill those teaching spots, but they want to make sure they hire qualified teachers with the right certification.  For more information on those teaching jobs go online to http://www.susd30.us/district/hr-jobs-2/.

AAA Arizona has safety tips for parents and students to remember as they head off to school this morning - have kids walk to school with a buddy; teach them not to talk to strangers. Remind students who ride bikes to school they are required to wear a helmet.

There is also a tip for drivers to remember - do not exceed 15 miles per hour near or around school zones.
