Johnny Cueto threw his fourth complete game of the season and the Reds killed an Indians rally with the help of a bizarre play to beat Cleveland 9-2.
Threatening to rally in the seventh inning, Cleveland's Yan Gomes hit a double off the right field wall. But, as Jay Bruce retrieved the ball on the warning track an errant warm-up pitch from the Reds bullpen flew on to the field and came to a rest near second base. The second ball confused David Murphy, who edged off third base, and was thrown out by the Reds with the live baseball for a key out.
Jay Bruce homered for the first time since early July and Ramon Santiago hit his first home run of the season.
It's the Reds first win at Cleveland's Progressive Field after 10 consecutive losses.
The same two teams continue their split-city four game series Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park.
