Crews were pouring concrete at 12th and Race streets Thursday in Over-the-Rhine as part of streetcar construction (map).
The intersection, called the "diamond" track, includes a combination of straight and curved track which creates a
junction or switch point that connects two loops and has been in the works since June 29. The geometric shape of the track resembles a diamond, project executive John Deatrick said.
One provides access to Over-the-Rhine and another for the Central Business District.
Under normal operating conditions, officials say the streetcar will run a single, continuous trip between its farthest point south on Second Street at The Banks to its farthest point north near Findlay Market.
However, designers of the track incorporated the diamond to give streetcar operators the option to run the loops separately.
Deatrick expects road closures to end by August 23 just before school starts in the area.
