TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Kevin Cordes was so good in the morning preliminary of the Men's 200-meter Breaststroke that he didn't need to be phenomenal in the Final.

Cordes won the event to qualify for the U.S. National Swim team that will compete at the Pan-Pacific Swimming Championships later this month in Australia.

The UA senior swam a record-breaking 2:07.86 in the prelim to break the U.S. Open record (2:08.01).

He bested the rest of the field by nearly three seconds leading to calls that he might have a world-record breaking performance in him for the final.

It did not happen. Cordes won but at a much more pedestrian 2:09.48, well off the world record time of 2:07.01.
