Marlins hold off late Reds rally in series opener

(FOX19) -

The Reds had the tying run on third with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't deliver in a 2-1 loss the Marlins on Friday.

Todd Frazier's double started the rally and a follow-up double by Devin Mesoraco scored Frazier, but Skip Schumaker and Zack Cozart halted the comeback with a groundout and strikeout respectively to doom the Reds (59-57).

Mike Leake (9-10) pitched seven innings and allowed just two earned runs on five hits. He also struck out seven in his tenth loss of the season. Leake's one big mistake came in the seventh when Giancarlo Stanton smacked a bomb to left for 28th home run of the season.

"Mike gave us a chance to win," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "He gave us seven strong innings. Nathan Eovaldi was outstanding as well. He didn't give us a lot of opportunities. We weren't able to get it done, but we'll be back and ready tomorrow."

"I was a little shaky at first, so I needed to speed up and get in a rhythm," said Leake. "I just tried to keep the ball down and minimize damage. I felt like I did a good job even though we just faced [The Marlins]."

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Reds who will look to bounce back Saturday night with Alfredo Simon on the bump.
