Metro Atlanta community protests against Michael Brown shooting

DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Decatur Thursday night to speak out against the shooting death of an unarmed, black teenager in Ferguson, Mo.

Decatur is just east of Downtown Atlanta.

Many people took turns speaking to the crowd about what they say needs to be done to stop shootings like this from happening in the future.

One elderly man shouted "If you want to make a correction, you've got to love your brother." Many people held up signs with one reading "Hands Up, Don't Shoot."

Erica Edwards also attended the event saying she was glad to see so much support. "I'm seeing so many people come out. It makes me feel like people are recognizing the ways in which minorities are wronged not just here in Atlanta but across the country," said Edwards.

"I have very strong feelings about this," said Rabb Muhammad, who was among the protesters and served his country in the U.S. military. "I was deployed several times overseas and I didn't get deployed to have the police (run) over our constitutional rights."

A white officer shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed, black 18-year-old Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri. Witnesses say the officer shot Brown several times as he was running away. Since the shooting, the town just outside St. Louis has seen protesters clash with officers in riot gear.
