Moment of silence held in memory of Michael Brown

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A simultaneous moment of silence was observed in more than 100 cities across the country, including Nashville, at exactly 6:20 p.m. Thursday in memory of Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was shot and killed last weekend in Ferguson, MO.

Participants in the large and peaceful protest chanted, "hands up, don't shoot," in front of the federal courthouse on Broadway.

Hundreds turned out for the gathering that lasted over an hour. For some, it was a platform to express their anger about racism.

"This is pain," participant Myrone Smith said. "This is why we're out here. We're not out here for coverage. We're not out here for Instagram. We're out here because we deal with this on an everyday basis."

The peaceful protesters came to show solidarity and call for an end to violence.

Word of the rally spread through social media, taking courthouse security guards by surprise. They watched but did not interfere.
