Local demonstrations show solidarity with Ferguson protests

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

In a pair of demonstrations Thursday evening, Portland residents voiced their outrage over the officer-involved shooting in Missouri that killed an unarmed man.

At Pioneer Courthouse Square, a couple hundred people gathered for a National Moment of Silence for the victims of police brutality. Attendees quietly held signs supporting the family of Michael Brown, or decrying police use of force.

Shortly after 6 p.m., dozens of protesters lined the sidewalk near the NE Precinct police station, holding signs and chanting, "no justice, no peace," and "hands up, don't shoot."

The demonstration lasted more than two hours, and at one point, protesters blocked Martin Luther King Blvd, swarming into the street.

The event, though rowdy at times, ended peacefully, and Portland police officers kept their distance.
