GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

People across the country, including in Greenville, gathered to reflect on the situation unfolding in Ferguson, MO, on Thursday.

A moment of silence was held and those who gathered also cried for justice in wake of the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed teen killed by a Ferguson police officer, and the unrest that has since followed.

"It's a police riot and those police rioted and locked up journalists unfairly, those who rioted and threw tear gas at people...they should be arrested," said Rev. Jesse Jackson, who attended Greenville's rally in front of the Peace Center on Thursday.

"We're upset with the way that America is treating our young black men," said event organizer Derrick Quarles.

A woman who grew up in Ferguson attended the Upstate rally, saying she is shocked by what has gone on.

"It was a comfortable community...it's not somewhere you would expect something like this to happen," Ferguson native Alicia Cannady said.

But she said Thursday's rallies bring hope.

"To see all these people standing in solidarity, they didn't know I was from there... they're not here for me, they're here for Michael Brown and his family and the Ferguson community and to see that...it's amazing," Cannady said.
