Linda Ronstadt: left Tucson because of 'car culture,' 'exotic attitudes'

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Grammy-winning singer and Tucson native Linda Ronstadt is opening up on her decision to move out of the Old Pueblo several years ago in an interview with The Arizona Republic.

Ronstadt cites a "car culture" in Tucson, saying, "To take (my son) to school, it would take about 25-30 minutes. ... It was like living in Los Angeles."

She also expresses disappointment the Mexican border fence and with her children encountering "exotic attitudes."  She says, "There was a lot of homophobic stuff that they would hear at school, which I found very, very offensive as we have lots of gay friends."

However, Ronstadt says she still likes Tucson and enjoys visiting and seeing friends.

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted Linda Ronstadt last month for a long singing career which includes dozens of pop hits in the 1970's and 1980's. She later won fame for performances of traditional Mexican music.  Last year, Ronstadt revealed she has been struggling with Parkinson's disease, saying it has left her unable to sing.
