TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Within Tucson city limits there are about 150 dip crossings on roadways where washes meet streets and flooding can create a big problem for drivers.

The City of Tucson Transportation Department has a 15 person crew that goes out to put up around 500 road closure signs and barriers when storms roll into town because of possible flooding like weather forecasters are predicting could happen again this week.

City officials said big washes in Tucson, like the Rillito and Pantano washes, have storm water gauges. The gauges give workers a good indication on when and where water is rising, allowing them to know when to close down the road in those areas. However, smaller washes can be just as dangerous too but more difficult to predict flooding.

Currently, the city of Tucson does not have a program or even funding to build infrastructure like box coverts that could allow drivers to pass over smaller washes if built under a bridge, according to city transportation leaders.

Since July 1, Tucson firefighters have responded to 8 swift water rescues at washes. Transportation officials urge drivers to wait it out or find a safer route because it only takes a few feet of rushing water to overtake a vehicle.
