TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Former astronaut and gun safety advocate Mark Kelly recently took the ALS ice bucket challenge with his wife, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, by his side as they joined a popular effort to raise awareness of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The challenge was posted on YouTube by their organization Americans for Responsible Solutions. Giffords was injured in an assassination attempt in Tucson on Jan. 8, 2011.

In the video, Kelly nominated his brother, astronaut Scott Kelly, friend and former Navy SEAL Jimmy Hatch and Wayne LaPierre, the CEO and Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association to participate in the challenge. The challenge is that they have 24 hours to donate money for ALS research or have ice water dumped over their heads.

Kelly said in the video that he and Giffords hope to one day agree with LaPierre "on more than just supporting ALS and Lou Gehrig's Disease research."

Kelly was nominated by the couple's friend Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, (D-FL).
