Toledo Police search for tire and rim thieves

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Just in the past few weeks Toledo police have seen nine tire and rim thefts. The most recent happened on Shoreland Ave.

Police say the criminals in a stolen truck or van scope out a neighborhood and find an easy target. Usually the vehicles targeted are a car or SUV parked in the driveway or on the side of the road. The thieves then prop the vehicles up with stolen landscape bricks and then take off with the tires and rims.

Toledo Police Sergeant Joe Hefferman says this is not the first time they've seen this crime.

"Last year we were hit pretty hard with this," said Hefferman. "We made some arrests and it started to go away and it seems like it's coming back again now."

Sgt. Hefferman says the thieves then sell the tires and rims usually online, putting anywhere from $50 to a few hundred in their pockets. His advice is to keep an eye out for your neighbors and report any suspicious vehicles or activity.

If you know who is responsible for this crime call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
