SAHUARITA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Was it the biggest win in school history?

That might be up for debate but Sahuarita's convincing 30-8 pounding of defending Division IV State Champion Lakeside Blue Ridge in the Coaches for Charity Kickoff Classic is as good as it gets.

The Yellow Jackets have won 13 state titles. The Mustangs fell short of the Finals in 2004 and just six years later went winless in the final year of Bernie McCall's tenure.

David Rodriguez in just his fourth season has taken this program to new heights. Sahuarita is now 25-8 since he took the reigns at the beginning of the 2011 season including one unbeaten regular season and back-to-back state playoff appearances.

After a dormant first quarter, the Mustangs struck first on a 36-yard touchdown pass from senior Calvin Jenkins to Allyn Williams.

Gabe Hernandez gave Sahuarita a 9-0 lead when he banged thru a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter.

That's when Rodriguez's defense took over. Interceptions by Andre Arvayo and Nasir Blake sent the tone that it was going to be a long night for Jack Belshe in his debut as Yellow Jackets coach.

Belshe took over the Blue Ridge program from Paul Moro who departed for Poston Butte after winning 318 games over 30 years for the program in the White Mountains.

Blake's 24-yard interception return for a touchdown made it 16-0 at the half.

Jenkins hooked up with Williams again to start the third quarter on a 29-yard strike and the game was never in doubt.

In all the Mustangs forced five turnover to avenge a 21-0 loss to Blue Ridge to open the 2013 season.

“We have to play these kind of games if we want to be in the conversation come Weeks 11, 12 and 13,” said Rodriguez. “Dennis Bene (Salpointe Catholic) does it. Jay Campos (Sabino) does it. Glenn Posey (Sunnyside) does it. And we're going to do it.”

Sahuarita is back in action next week in their annual crosstown battle with Walden Grove.
