GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) -

Another head scratching international competition ended for Kevin Cordes Sunday night. At least this time there was a gold medal to celebrate.

Cordes joined Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps and Tucson Ford Aquatics teammate Matt Grevers in winning the men's 4x100-meter medley relay in 3:29.72, holding off Japan and Australia to cap off a Sunday night program at the Pan Pacific championships.

Cordes earlier in the day made the decision to pull out of the 200-meter breaststroke final in order to concentrate on the relay event.

The UA senior cost the U.S. a gold medal in the medley relay last summer at the World Championships when he jumped into the water too soon for his leg of the race.

The disqualification monster however did find Cordes again in Austrailia. He was ruled out of his main race, the 100-meter breaststroke Friday when he removed his swimming googles mid-race.

Swimming World reported Cordes swim cap slipped when he dove into the water at the start of the race, causing an issue with his googles. Cordes finishes fourth but was DQ'd at the conclusion of the race. This after he had swam a personal best in the morning prelim.

Cordes, despite dominating performances in the breaststroke events here in the United States, has yet to medal as an individual in his first two international competitions.

The medley relays were the last events on the program after the open water section was postponed to Aug. 31 in Maui because of concerns over water quality following three days of wet and windy weather on the Gold Coast.

The United States topped the medal standings with 14 gold and 40 overall,.

"This is the best relay to be in. We've had such a great tradition in this relay," Phelps said.

He won three gold and two silver medals at his first international competition since announcing his comeback.
