HAYDEN, AL (WBRC) -

Hiding in a blanket is where Brandon Kanute found one of the dangerous, unwanted guests that have invaded his home.

"We would go from seeing one or two. Then it went to six, ten or more," Kanute said.

Glue traps placed throughout the home and in the garage have caught dozens of poisonous brown recluse spiders.

"Yesterday I was cleaning, I pulled out our dresser and there were two on a glue trap. Then I killed two more that were on the floor as I was vacuuming. I was crying. I mean I have two kids," Kristi Kanute said.

And Kristi says most of the spiders have been found in her three-year-old son's room, even in his toy box.

"I don't want them to get bit. As a mom you want to protect your kids and having to deal with something like this is, it makes you feel helpless," Kristi said.

Wayne's Environmental has been treating the couple's home for a month.

"[The spiders] prey at night, hide during the day," Eric Frye with Wayne's Environmental said.

"You treat as long as you need to, to alleviate the problem. That can be one treatment, could be two or three. It could persist for months," Frye said.

"I'm ready for them to be gone. Ready to not have to worry about my kids," Kristi said.

Before they consider moving, Brandon and Kristi hope they can get rid of the spiders. For now, they are trying to protect themselves.

"Every night we go through the same process. Lift sheets. Check underneath their bed sheets. Check underneath our bed sheets," Brandon said.

They also check their clothes before putting them on.

Eric Frye says to try to keep brown recluse spiders away, get rid of any clutter inside your home. It's also good to clear tall, overgrown grass around your house.
