Latos grabs 60th career win as Reds hold off Cubs

(FOX19) -

Mat Latos didn't have his best stuff early, but the new father finished strong on Wednesday night for his 60th career victory in the Reds 7-5 win over the Cubs.

Latos (5-3) pitched seven strong innings. He gave up four earned runs and seven hits, but struck out ten in his fifth win of the season.

"He made some outstanding pitches. He really got on the same page with Devin [Mesoraco]," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "He gave us exactly what we needed."

The Cubs took an early 2-0 lead when Luis Valbuena and Jorge Soler, in his first major league at-bat, pounded back-to-back homers off Latos. The Reds (64-69) responded with six unanswered runs, including four in the fourth inning to storm back and take a 6-2 lead. Skip Schumaker drove in two runs for the Reds going 2-for-4 with a single and a double.

The Cubs made things interesting in the eighth inning when Javier Baez and Soler drove in three runs to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Chris Heisey came up with a huge pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-5 Cincinnati.

Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth and earned his 28th save of the season.

Billy Hamilton became the ninth player in Reds history to steal 50 bases in a single season. He's the first rookie to accomplish the feat in the majors since Jacoby Ellsbury in 2008.
