Cluster of burglaries reported in Green Valley retirement community

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A rash of burglaries in a quiet, retirement community in Green Valley has the neighborhood on alert.

Pima County Sheriff's Green Valley division is looking into six separate burglaries that happened near the San Ignacio Golf Estates community in the past month. All of the homes were unoccupied at the time of the break ins.

Detective John Rupp said the first two break ins were reported on August 1 near the intersection of Golf Estates and Camino del Sol. One vehicle and a "good portion" of items were taken from a home. A home next door was also forced into and a TV was stolen.

Four more burglaries happened within a mile or so of each other, including a break in near West Frontage Road and Via del Petirrojo, two more on Desert Jewel Loop and Camino del Sol, and the most recent burglary occurred near Vista Ridge, which was reported on Tuesday.

"Green Valley is largely a retirement community. It's age-restricted so a good portion of the population is 55 years and older. The good portion of Green Valley is also seasonal, meaning the snow bird community lives here part of the year," Rupp said.

Of the six burglaries, Rupp said nothing was stolen from the three most recent incidents. One stolen vehicle and other items were recently recovered in Tucson, according to Rupp.

The sheriff's department recommends the community to be vigilant, especially for their neighbors when they are away.

Jim Scovil moved to Green Valley from Cape Cod Massachusetts six months ago. He said the neighborhood works closely with the sheriff's auxiliary to look for suspicious activity.

"A lot of these neighborhoods are pretty tightly knit so we know if there's a vehicle or if we see the lights on that shouldn't be while other people are away, if something doesn't look right, then we make a call."

Detectives have persons of interest in the case but there have been no arrests or suspects named. Rupp said residents living nearby should report burglaries promptly.

"If they got home check services, have them check the homes more often if possible, just so we have a better time frame. Some of these happened within a two or three week period," Rupp said.
