Busy travel weekend as residents say 'goodbye' to summer

Many call Labor Day weekend the 'end to the summer' and a large number of Arizonans who have plans to take a trip as they say their goodbyes to the season.

Whether driving to their end of summer destination or flying there, Arizonans will not be alone.  According to AAA Arizona the busiest day for leaving will be Friday and the busiest return will be on Monday.  

AAA Arizona is saying nearly 560,000 residents will be driving to their Labor Day destination, while some 668,000 will be flying instead.  For drivers this is a 1.4 percent increase from the same time last year, when only 550,000 traveled by car.  This increase in vehicle traffic is despite an increase in gas prices from 2013; today gas on average in Arizona is $3.46, while in 2013 it was only $3.34.  

Air travel for Labor Day has also seen an increase this year.  According to AAA Arizona 668,000 people will be traveling by plane to their 'end of summer' destination; with 58,000 coming from Arizona for 2014, as compared to 57,000 in 2013.  This is a 1.5 percent increase in travel. 

AAA Arizona officials are saying the increase in travel is due to greater consumer confidence, which has led to more spending.
