Jobless apps drop, economy beats expectations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The U.S. economy is doing better than many expected.

A new report shows the economy grew at a 4.2 percent annual rate from April to June. It is the fastest pace since the third quarter of 2013.

The Labor Department says unemployment benefits fell 1,000 last week to 298,000.

Economists say the drop is a sign employers are cutting fewer jobs and hiring is likely to remain strong.

Since February, average job gains have been the best in eight years.
