New TUSD program to keep students from missing school

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Missing two days a month of school may seem harmless, but officials say it can knock students off track, making them less likely to graduate.

School officials will launch a new outreach program to raise awareness about how important it is to attend school.

The Mayor of Tucson, along with other officials will kick off the campaign at Roskruge Bilingual Magnet Middle School at 10 a.m.

All of this is for National Attendance Awareness Month, beginning in September, just a few days away.  A main point officials feel needs to be covered is getting to school on time every day. Parents may be asking why, and school officials are answering that missing a day of school here or there can effect whether a student succeeds in school.  Missing even two days a month can add up to 18 days a year, for a child's education that is a large chunk of lost time.

The new outreach campaign will consist of reminders, like posters for businesses to put in their windows, calendars as well as a kindergarten outreach program.

Officials from Tucson Unified School District, the Pima County Health Department and the United Way are expected to be at the kick off at Roskruge Bilingual School.

It may be bad news for a bear spotted several times in an area in Rio Rico the last few weeks, state wildlife workers may have to put it down.  However, they may not have to kill it, IF neighbors change their ways.
