Judge rules BP could pay billions more in oil spill fines

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A federal judge ruled the oil company BP could end up paying $18 billion more in penalties because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.

The judge said BP was reckless and that could nearly quadruple the amount of civil penalties the company has to pay for polluting the gulf with oil.

The judge found BP put profits ahead of safety in some of the decisions that led to the explosion.

BP said it will appeal. The company made $24 billion in profits in 2013.
