Vail students helping raise funds for Fisher House in AZ

VAIL, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Vail School District is holding the first school district-wide fundraiser for the Fisher House Foundation which will help fund a new facility in Arizona.

The Arizona Fisher House will be built on the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System campus near 6th Ave. and Ajo Way. It will provide a temporary 'home away from home' to veterans and their families, at no cost when they have to travel from out-of-town to the VA for medical care.

Over the last few days, all 18 schools in the Vail School District have been creatively coming up with ways to get students involved.

Cienega High School has been selling red and blue paper paws and white stars. Students and family members can write messages on them to thank current or former military members or to honor or in memory of a loved one. The paper paws are then arranged to make a large American flag.

The Vail School District knows the public can donate directly to the Arizona Fisher House, but wants to give the community another option to help. District officials are asking local businesses and the public to sponsor a school or do a matching dollar amount raised by students and staff.

The Vail School District's fundraiser ends today at 4:30 p.m. Those interested in donating money can call the district office today before then at (520) 879-2000.

However, the fundraising effort for the Arizona Fisher House is ongoing.  They are trying to raise $3 million for the newest Fisher House in Tucson.
