TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Pima Community College men's basketball team (13-4, 5-4 in ACCAC conference) found itself in a tight battle against ACCAC Division I team Central Arizona College on Saturday.
The Aztecs defeated Central Arizona 89-87. With under 13 seconds left in the game, Central Arizona brought the ball up-court and attempted a three-point shot but Ezini Ugbisien (Palo Verde HS) found himself in the right spot for the defensive rebound and was fouled with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. Central Arizona couldn't get a final shot off in the end.
Down 44-42 at the end of the first half, the Aztecs trailed for the first 13 minutes of the second half and by as much as nine points. Down 67-59 at one point, the Aztecs went on a 15-2 run to take a 74-69 lead with seven minutes left as they held Central scoreless for almost four minutes.
Central would retake the lead at 79-78 with 3:34 left but the Aztecs came back with buckets from Dorian Paige (Palo Verde HS), who made it 82-81 and Bryan Cervantes (Nogales HS), who hit a pair of free throws. Pima led for good at 84-82 with 1:23 left. Justice Martion and Andre Bearden (Sahuaro HS) were a combined 5 for 6 at the line in the closing minute of the game.
Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS) finished with a game-high 24 points and included seven rebounds and four assists. Matt O'Boyle scored all 16 of his points in the first half as he went 4 for 6 from beyond the arc. Bearden and Cervantes each finished with 14 points and Martion contributed with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC Division II play on Wednesday at the West Campus when they host South Mountain Community College at 7:30.
