JCHoops: Pima's Gersh goes off

TUCSON, AZ -

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (16-8, 8-8 in ACCAC) got a major contribution from its standout player on Wednesday.

Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS) had season-highs with 45 points and 22 rebounds as the Aztecs defeated Eastern Arizona College 96-85 in Thatcher. The win snapped Pima's four-game losing streak and also earned them a sweep of Eastern Arizona for the regular season. The win also surpassed Pima's complete win total from last season.

Gershman scored the first 12 points for the Aztecs in the second half but Eastern Arizona kept the score close and even led 61-56. The Aztecs came back and went on a 13-2 run (Gershman didn't score any points in that stretch) to retake the lead at 69-63 with about nine minutes left.

The Aztecs held onto a single digit lead until they went on a crucial 6-0 run with two baskets from Dorian Paige (Palo Verde HS) and one from Andres Marquez (Nogales HS) to take a 94-81 lead with about two minutes left.

Gershman hit three 3-pointers in the first half and converted on three 3-point play opportunities in the second half. He had 23 points and 11 rebounds at the end of the first half as he scored 19 of the team's first 31 points.

Paige scored all of his 11 points in the second half and also had five assists. Marquez scored all 10 of his points off the bench in the second half. Esteban Lopez (Cholla HS) contributed with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Cochise College at 4:00 p.m.
