TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - It looked early like it was going to be an easy road to the Division II state quarterfinals for the Tucson Badgers.
Instead the season is over.
Maricopa rallied from an early 16-point deficit Friday night to stun the Badgers 52-50 on their home floor and eliminate the Tucson girls from the state championships.
The Badgers dominated early as they built a 29-13 second quarter lead.
Alondra Leon helped Tucson control the glass while senior Bailey Johnson hit three-point shot after three-point shot on her way to scoring her 1,000th career point.
But bad shot selection and careless play in the last two and half quarter allowed the Rams to rally for the unprobable upset.
Maricopa (26-5) advances to play Flagstaff at Gila River Arena in Glendale next Wednesday. Tucson's season ends at 25-6.
Elsewhere, top seed Cienega will face Ironwood Ridge in the quarterfinals. The Bobcats beat Moon Valley 62-40 while Nighthawks picked up a 55-49 road win at Cactus Shadow.
10th seed Sahuaro is also thru to the Elite Eight after a 49-46 victory over Cibola. The Cougars will take on #2 seed Seton Catholic on Thursday at Chaparral High School.
