TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Cienega may have had the better talent but Nogales had the better team.
The 11th seeded Apaches used a precision offensive game to take apart the 3rd seed Bobcats 57-31 Thursday night at Amphi High School.
Nogales (26-7) advances to the Division II state semifinals to face Arcadia at 11:30 Friday morning at Gila River Arena. The Titans ended Cholla's state title run with a 68-56 win.
The Apaches dominated from the outset controlling the boards and using a dribble drive offensive scheme to find easy baskets for their post players.
Jesbre Valenzuela and Alberto Maldonado led Nogales with 14 points. Jose Estrada added 13 while Adalberto Diaz poured in 12.
Terrence Johnson scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half to pace Cienega.
The Bobcats came into the game winners of nine straight but see their season end at 25-4. Cienega had previously beaten Nogales twice, once during the regular season (66-53) and also just 12 days ago in the Section II championship game (65-51).
In other action on the boys side, Palo Verde is in the Divsion III Final Four after a 52-43 upset of Chinle. The Titans will face Snowflake in a 1:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday at Gila River Arena.
The Sahuaro girls were eliminated by defending Division II state champion Seton Catholic Prep 55-40 while in Division III Pusch Ridge fell to Safford 47-37.
