JCHOOPS: Pima's seasons end

TUCSON, AZ -

The Pima Community College men's basketball team could not overcome a double digit deficit on Wednesday in its Region I, Division II semifinal game against No. 2 seeded Tohono O'Odham Community College.

The No. 3 seeded Aztecs outscored Tohono O'Odham 47-41 in the second half but fell in the end 80-71 in Sells, AZ. The Aztecs trailed 39-24 at halftime.

For the second straight year under head coach Brian Peabody, the Aztecs advanced to the Region I, Division II tournament.

The Aztecs finished the season with an 18-13 overall record.

Meanwhile the Aztec women dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday in the Region I, Division II semifinals match-up.

With 0.7 seconds left, Heather Rogers (Navajo Prep HS) in-bounded the ball to Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) and her shot fell off the mark as the No. 1 seeded Aztecs lost to No. 4 Phoenix College 55-53. It ended Pima's six-year streak of being in the Region I, Division II championship game.

The Aztecs finished the game with 24 turnovers and went 12 for 25 from the free-throw line.

Melody McLaughlin (Mountain View HS) scored a team-high 15 points with nine rebounds. Rogers scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and had five steals. Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Aztecs finished the season with 17-14 overall record and it was the first time they were the No. 1 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament since 2011.

Arizona’s Deandre Ayton was a force in his lone college season and looks like the favorite to land with Phoenix as the No. 1 overall pick.
