TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - On a day when top Southern Arizona pitching prospect Jio Orozco said he didn't have his fastball, he still struck out 15 batters in a 5-4 win for top-ranked Salpointe Catholic over #12 Ironwood Ridge at Gleeson Field.
The Nighthawks (15-4) Nick Estrella matched Orozco pitch-for-pitch although not strikeout-for-strikeout and should have been out of a jam in the 7th inning.
But Ironwood Ridge centerfielder Matthew Baker could not handle a potential inning-ending flyball as it clanked off the top of his glove and fell to the ground to give the Lancers (15-3) the victory.
Orozco escaped a 1st and 2nd no-out jam in the second by recording three straight strikeouts, impressive as he hit low 90s on the radar guns of several scouts seated in the stands.
The Lancers responded in the bottom of the inning on a clutch two-run single by Jose Osete to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Nighthawks though rallied on the bat of junior shortstop Derek Daly. Daly blasted an RBI triple in the 3rd to cut Ironwood Ridge's deficit to 2-1 and then put The Ridge on top when he socked a two-run home run in the 5th.
Salpointe Catholic re-took the lead (4-3) in the bottom of the sixth when Donny Sands matched Daly with a two-run homer of his own.
IRHS tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jared McKemy.
