Long term construction coming to a close on the south side

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Long term construction will come to a close in about a month on a portion of Kino Parkway on the south side.

Tucson Department of Transportation crews have started final paving at the Kino Parkway/22nd Street intersection. Roadwork began here in the fall of 2012.

Workers will lay down the final two layers of asphalt from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. This should continue through May 8, 2015. Paving on 22nd Street should be complete by April 24, while final paving will wrap up on Kino Parkway by May 8.

While crews are paving, only one lane will be available in each direction. Drivers can expect significant delays here. Side streets and driveways in the area will close temporarily, while crews work in the area.

This road project has consisted of creating an overpass to elevate Kino Parkway over 22nd Street. This will provide two continuous lanes of traffic in each direction, according to City of Tucson officials.

In addition, overpass on and off ramps now have one left turn and one right turn for drivers wishing to enter and exit Kino Parkway. 22nd Street was also widened to provide three lanes in each direction, exclusive right turn lanes, and dual left turn lanes.

When construction is complete, Kino Parkway and 22nd Street will also have bike lanes and landscaped center medians separating traffic lanes.

This construction is part of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) funded Kino Parkway and 22nd Street improvement project.

Under the program, the city will choose several large intersections to become protected left. That means left turns would be made only on a green arrow.
