SVB: Cats Post Runner-Up Finish at Pac-12 Invitational

TUCSON, AZ -

Tenth-ranked Arizona sand volleyball posted a runner-up finish in the Pac-12 Invitational in Santa Monica, Calif., picking up victories against No. 8 UCLA (3-2), ASU (3-2), and a pair of losses to No. 1 USC (0-5) in the second round and (0-5) in the championship match.

Against No. 8 UCLA, the Wildcats defeated the Bruins 3-2. Arizona's Madison and Mckenna Witt dominated against UCLA's No. 1 team of Kamila Tan and Zoe Nightingale (21-19, 21-14). No. 2 team of Kendall Polan and Kaitlyn Leary got a win against Madie Smith and Elise Zappia (21-18, 21-10), No.3 team of Emily Kiser and Rachel Rhoades got a victory over Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver (21-19, 11-21, 15-9).

Allie Cook and Taylor Arizobal fell to the Bruins in straight sets against Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye (13-21, 17-21). Arizona's No. 5 team of Hailey Devlin and Sarah Seiber went to three sets, but lost to UCLA's Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt (21-18, 19-21, 15-13).

The Wildcats dropped their second match to No. 1 ranked USC in the second round, (0-5).

Arizona's No. 1 team of Madison and McKenna Witt fell in straight sets against the team of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes (21-14, 21-14). USC's No. 2 team of Sophie Bukovec and Alexa Strange got a victory against UA's Kendall Polan and Kaitlyn Leary in a tight match (21-18, 21-17).

Trojans No. 3 team of Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton defeated Wildcat's Emily Kiser and Rachel Rhoades in straight sets (21-8, 21-12). Taylor Arizobal and Allie Cook of the Cats No. 4 team fell to Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler (21-12, 26-24).

Jenna Belton and Bria Russ of USC's No. 5 team took the match getting a victory over UA's Hailey Devlin and Sarah Seiber (21-10, 21-12).

Arizona followed with a 3-2 victory over ASU in the double-elimination tournament. The No. 1 team of Madison and McKenna WItt took the match against ASU's team of Bianca Arellano and Macey Gardner with a win, (21-12, 21-17).

Catch the Cats as they take the sand against University of California Berkley for their first round in Pac-12 Pairs Invitational tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. PT in Santa Monica, Calif.
