Time to get sandy

TUCSON - Sophomore pair McKenna and Madison Witt and senior team Madi Kingdon and Kaitlyn Leary have been selected to represent the Arizona sand volleyball team at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama May 1-3.

The two duos have been selected to compete in the 16-team Pairs Championship to decide the top pair in the country.

The top pairs from the eight teams selected to the team championships (USC, Hawai'i, FIU, Pepperdine, Georgia State, Florida State, Long Beach State and Stetson) are automatically qualified for the 16-team single-elimination tournament, while 10 pairs dubbed the "Best of the Rest" will compete in pool play to earn the final eight spots.

The Witt twins have been placed in Pool A along with Betsi Metter/Sarah Sponcil (LMU), Marcela Araya/Michelle McNamee (ULM), Mandi Orellana/Katie Lindelow (LSU) and Kiriana Hirini/Bethanie Thomas (UAB).

Kingdon and Leary have been placed in Pool B along with Shannon Dugan/Mackenzie Phelps (GCU), Tea Juric/Jackie Wegner (Tulane), Melissa Morello/Catey Warren (College of Charleston) and Zoe Nightengale/Kamila Tan (UCLA).

Pool play will take place Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2. The 16-team Pairs Championship will take place on Sunday, May 3 beginning at 8 a.m. with the championship occurring at 2 p.m. CT.


CBS Sports Network will televise portions of the competition in a special broadcast that will premiere on Saturday, May 23rd 10AM Tucson time.
