Impressive explosion on the sun

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Check out the below animation of an explosion on the sun, called a solar flare. This occurred at 5:05 PM Arizona time on Cinco de Mayo.

EarthSky.org says the flare "created a pulse of UV radiation and X-rays that caused a strong radio blackout over the Pacific. It also caused a short-lived radio burst, heard as static on shortwave receivers." Click here to hear that static.

Solar flares like this one eject massive amounts of energy into space. If the Earth is in the path of that energy speeding through space, satellite communications, GPS, and radar can experience brief outages and possibly failures. Fortunately, this solar flare sent that energy away from Earth.
