TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - 34 years ago Hope Ezeigbo, Felix Imadiyi, Randy Redditt and Rod Barksdale teamed to run the 4x400 meters in 3:05.81 for the Arizona Wildcats.
They set the school record that year and finished 6th overall at the NCAA Championships
Who knew it would take till 2015 for UA to return a foursome to this event with a chance to run for a national title.
Blake Eichler, Pete Lauderdale II, Bryce Houston and Miles Parish will have that opportunity this week when they compete in Eugene at the NCAA Championships.
The four shattered that school record at the NCAA West Preliminaries on May 30 when they ran the event in 3:04.51.
The Wildcats have gotten better as the season has gone on. Eichler, Lauderdale II, Houston and Parish have posted three of the top four times in program history.
Two of the four believe it or not started their collegiate track careers at other Pac-12 schools. Eichler is a junior who transferred to UA from rival Arizona State and Lauderdale II is a senior who was given an immediate release by conference-rival UCLA allowing him to compete this season.
"Basically they told me that they didn't think much of him," said UA Track Director Fred Harvey about Lauderdale II. "You do not release a guy of that level to a conference rival. You just don't."
Our David Kelly caught up with the foursome and their coaches Fred Harvey and Francesca Green to find out how they put an end to the school's 34-year drought in the event.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin on Wednesday at the Track Town U.S.A. in Eugene, Oregon. The men's semifinal in the 4x400 event is on the opening day docket.
