Coronado National Forest celebrates Fee free day on Saturday

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

In honor of National Get Outdoors Day, Saturday, June 13 is one of several 'fee free' days happening this year.

The fee-free program is a cooperative effort between several federal land management agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Fees are waived generally for day-use areas, such as picnic grounds, developed trailheads and destination visitor centers. Concessionaire-operated sites may be included in the waiver if the permit holder wishes to participate. Visitors are asked to contact their local ranger district offices to learn if their destinations require fees and if fees are to be waived.

A variety of 'fee free' activities are available to visitors to the Coronado National Forest's 12 'sky island' mountain ranges.  Additionally, the Sierra Vista Ranger District will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day at Parker Canyon Lake from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. National Get Outdoors Day is intended to encourage children to recreate outdoors, and all activities will be free of charge.

Arizona Game and Fish Department will host a fishing clinic, and Raven's Way Wild Journeys will lead nature walks at 10 a.m. and noon. Coronado National Forest will engage children in interactive outdoor learning experiences.  Other activities include live reptile displays from the Huachuca Herpetological Association, a BB gun range from the National Wild Turkey Federation, and archery practice from JT's Archery. Additional partners include Boy Scouts of America; Huachuca Gem and Mineral Society; Kartchner Caverns State Park; National Park Service; Ramsey Canyon Preserve; Sit Means Sit; and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Sonoita Station. National Get Outdoor Day is a “fee free” day for Lakeview Campground.

Please visit http://www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org/ for more information and directions to the lake, or contact the Sierra Vista Ranger District at (520) 378-0311 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for more information on the event at Parker Canyon Lake.

The remaining 2015 scheduled fee-free days observed by the Forest Service are:

Sept. 26: National Public Lands Day, http://www.fs.fed.us, the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort in support of public lands.

Nov. 11: Veteran's Day, http://www.fs.fed.us, commemorates the end of World War I and pays tribute to all military heroes past and present.
