Four Wildcats to Compete in World Cup of Softball X

 TUCSON – Arizona softball will be well represented in the World Cup of Softball X, which kicks off today in Irvine, Calif. Kellie Fox (14-15), Brigette Del Ponte (10-13), Estela Piñon (13-14) and incoming freshman Alyssa Palomino will be competing in the event.

Fox (U.S. National Team) and Palomino (U.S. Jr. National Team) will represent the country while Del Ponte and Piñon will compete for Team Mexico.

Eight international teams from seven countries will compete in the event, which begins Monday morning at 9 a.m. PDT. Participating countries are Argentina, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the USA Softball Junior Women's National Team, the USA Softball Women's National Team and Venezuela.

Palomino's quest for gold begins on Monday at 4:30 p.m. PDT against Argentina while Fox, Del Ponte and Piñon begin at 7 p.m. when Team USA takes on Mexico.

Following their opening game of the tournament, both USA teams will play to play six other pool-play games with the finals to be played on Sunday, July 5. Placement into the Sunday finals will be determined based off round-robin action.

The World Cup of Softball X marks the first international event of the 2015 season for both the Women's National Team (WNT) and Junior Women's National Team (JWNT).  For the WNT, the World Cup is one of three international events in 2015. Following the World Cup of Softball, Team USA will travel internationally to compete in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 15-26 and will then head to Japan August 2-10. For the JWNT, the World Cup will give the team their first international competition before taking on the world at the WBSC Junior Women's World Championship (JWWC), August 9-15 in Oklahoma City, Okla. at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex.
