Tucson's NASCAR series is wide open

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - You can call it Week 5 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series out at Tucson Speedway.

The fifth race in the points chase goes off Saturday night with the Firecracker 100.

Veteran Chuck Wares, who took the checkered flag two weeks ago, currently leads the points standing in the Super Late Models division.

It's a more wide open division this season with the absence of nine-time points champion Ron Norman who is driving this summer on the K&N West tour.

Norman and K&N teammate Matt Levin returned to Tucson to race in the Icebreaker 106 on June 20. Levin finished 3rd and Norman took 9th in the race won by Wares.

Norman and Levin have run six races so far on K&N West tour and currently sit 12th and 14th respectively in the points standings.

Rookie Vanessa Robinson, from New Mexico, has a victory this season in Tucson as do veteran Paul Banghart and Washington-based driver Tayler Riddle.

The gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m.
