Cats Make Summer League All-Star Teams

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona baseball team has seen four players earn recognition on summer league all-star teams, including pitcher Matt Hartman in the Valley League and position players Zach Gibbons, Michael Hoard and Cody Ramer in the California Collegiate League.

Hartman, who was 1-0 with a 1.69 earned run average in six games as a freshman for the Wildcats, has turned in a strong summer for the Harrisonburg (Va.) Turks. The righty has anchored the staff, posting a 4-0 record with a 2.64 earned run average in 30.2 innings. He has also struck out 26 and allowed just four extra base hits. In Sunday's All-Star game, Hartman pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout as his South Division team prevailed, 5-4, over the North Division.

Across the country, Gibbons and Ramer have teamed up to lead the Conejo Oaks, while Hoard has shined for the Walnut Creek Crawdads.

Gibbons, who batted .287 in 53 games as a junior outfielder for Arizona, is hitting a robust .362 in his 26 games with the Oaks. He has scored 23 runs and driven in 16, while belting nine doubles, two triples and a homer.

Ramer, who started 12 games and appeared in 27 as a junior infielder this past season, is batting .276 in 21 games for the Oaks. He has scored 21 runs, batted in 21 and stolen 10 bases, while drawing 14 walks.

Hoard, a .264 hitter in 25 games as a sophomore for the Wildcats, has posted a .338 average in 19 games with the Crawdads. The left-handed hitter has scored 14 runs and added 12 RBI, while hitting four doubles and a homer. He has drawn 16 walks against only 13 strike outs.

The CCL’s annual all-star game is set for 7 p.m. (PDT) on July 15 at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif. The game will be televised live to a national audience by Fox Sports.
