Construction for pedestrian underpass begins near Mariposa Port of Entry

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Nogales drivers can expect delays on State Route 189 through this fall, as Arizona Department of Transportation crews install a pedestrian underpass at The Mariposa Port of Entry.

Northbound State Route 189 will narrow daily at Port Access Drive for construction of the southern end of the underpass. Port Access drive will also shut down at State Route 189 to accommodate this work.

Travelers can access Port Access Drive by using a temporary driveway located nearby.

These restrictions are set to last through October of this year, so drivers in the area should plan accordingly.

The under crossing will have 356 foot long, 10 by 10 concrete box culvert on the east side of SR 189. This will include ventilation structures and lighting. Other improvements will include new sidewalks, traffic signals and storm drain improvements.

The entire $3.3 million project is set to wrap up by December.
