Power to shut off this weekend for Nogales pedestrian underpass construction

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Nogales, Arizona locals should be aware of a short term power loss scheduled this weekend, as Unisource relocates a high voltage power line,

Businesses on the west side of State Route 189 at Free Port Access Drive in Nogales will lose their power from 7 p.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Sunday.

This is part of Arizona Department of Transportation's new Mariposa Port of Entry pedestrian underpass project. When this wraps up in December 2015, people will be able to safely travel through the Mariposa Port of Entry on foot, by using the new undercrossing.

Traffic restrictions are also in place because of this roadwork. Northbound State Route 189 is narrowed to one lane at Port Access Drive for construction of the southern end of the underpass. This will continue through October of this year.

Port Access Drive is also closed at State Route 189 through October. Drivers can detour to a nearby driveway, just south of the area.

When complete, the underpass will consist of a 356 foot long, 10 x 10 concrete box culvert on the east side of SR 189. This will include ventilation structures and lighting. Other improvements constitute new sidewalks, traffic signals and storm drain improvements.
