TUCSON, Ariz. – The Pac-12 Conference announced on Tuesday that sophomore forward Gabi Stoian has been awarded the first Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week of the 2015 season.
Stoian was a force to be reckoned with this past weekend as she found the back of the net three times and also dished out one assist for a total of seven points, helping lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 start. She leads the conference in points and is tied for first in goals scored. The sophomore took six shots and was on target in five of them. At the end of the weekend, Stoian was on the field for 154 of the 180 possible minutes.
When Arizona opened their season with Abilene Christian on Friday, Aug. 21, Stoian finished the game with a brace as she scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from Hannah Wong and in the 63rd when she scored off a Charlotte Brascia assist. She also added an assist in the 15th minute off a set piece when she found Cali Crisler and she was able to head it past the keeper. The Wildcats went on to defeat Abilene Christian 4-0.
On Sunday, Aug. 23, Stoian tied the game with a penalty kick in the 35th minute against Santa Clara. Arizona went on to defeat the Broncos in thrilling fashion 2-1.
Stoian is now eighth on the all-time Arizona scoring list with 16 career goals and has the sixth-most career points of any Arizona player with 40.
