TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Tucson Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting on the south side.

TPD was called to the 5800 block of South Southland Boulevard around 4 a.m. Sunday for a report of attempted burglary, according to police on the scene.

Someone tried to remove the burglar bars from the windows of a home, and a resident called 911 and described a Hispanic male with no shirt, according to Sgt. Pete Dugan, a TPD spokesman.

A short time later, police saw a person fitting that description riding a bicycle nearby, and they began to pursue him, Dugan said.

Then, police say, the man on the bicycle pulled a gun, and the pursuing officers fired several times, killing him near South Park Avenue and East Drexel Road. The suspect has been identified as David M. Leon, 40.

No officers were injured in the incident. The officer involved is the shooting is Shawn Simmons, who has been with the department for the past three years.
