End of monsoon signals opening of campgrounds at Bonita Canyon

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - As the monsoon winds down, new campgrounds are opening up in the Chiricahua National Monument at Bonita Campground.  As of Sept. 25 the campgrounds are ready for winter campers.

The campground is located at the opening of Bonita Canyon with several streams running through the area, which presented a problem if flooding occurred.

Previously the campground was available on a first-come, first-served basis, but now reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Fees are $12 per site, per night or $6 per site, per night for the America the Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior and Access pass holders.

All other park facilities are open, including the scenic eight-mile Bonita Canyon Drive, the visitor center - which is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, Faraway Ranch Historic District, picnic areas, and 17 miles of hiking trails.

The park is open 24 hours a day, although the road can be temporarily closed due to hazardous conditions such as flooding and related debris flow. For more information, go to www.nps.gov/chir or call the visitor center staff at (520) 824-3560, ext. 0.
