Ozone hole in southern hemisphere grew in 2015

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

According to data by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA's Aura satellite, the ozone hole near Antarctica grew quite a bit in 2015.

The ozone hole reached its largest size this year on October 2nd. The image below shows the hole that day, at a whopping 10.9 million square miles. The largest the hole has ever been was 11.5 million square miles back in 2000. This year was the fourth largest ever the ozone hole has got.

The ozone hole is not literally a hole in the atmosphere but an area where the ozone concentration is much lower than the normal atmospheric standard. It hole usually reaches its yearly maximum size in late winter/early spring for the southern hemisphere.
