ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Sunnyside had the fight, but this year they didn’t have the finish.

Ironwood Ridge quarterback Cole Gerken threw four touchdown passes including two in the fourth quarter and the Nighthawks held off a stingy Blue Devils squad 34-30 to advance to the 2nd round of the Division II state football playoffs.

4th seed Ironwood Ridge (9-2) will host the 5th seeded Padres from Tempe Marcos de Niza (9-2) next Friday night in Oro Valley.

The Nighthawks beat the Padres 35-24 in Tempe in Week 8.

Jared McKemy caught three touchdown passes for Ironwood Ridge, two from Gerken and one from Harrison Beemiller. He finished the game with 152 yards receiving.

Beemiller also caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Gerken who found Daniel Peabody on 15-yard strike with 5:09 to play to give Ironwood Ridge a 34-24 lead.

The Nighthawks rally came after Sunnyside had erased an early 21-8 first half deficit.

Nick Ohagin scored his second rushing touchdown in the third quarter on a one-yard run to cut The Ridge’s lead to 21-16.

Then after a defensive stop by the Blue Devils, Daniel Hernandez beat the Nighthawks Joey Ventimiglia on a deep route for a 51-yard touchdown to give the Blue Devils their first and only lead of the night.

Ohagin finished the game with two touchdowns rushing and two passing. The senior in his final prep contest ran 150 yards but also threw three interceptions, two corralled by Beemiller and one by McKemy.

Sunnyside (6-5) was trying to duplicate their 35-14 first round upset win over Ironwood Ridge from a season ago.

The Blue Devils end the season with a three-game losing streak.
